Mobile app launch checklist

A mobile app launch is a sequence, not an event. The biggest mistake indie founders make is saving all the energy for launch day and then watching the spike fade in 48 hours. A real launch starts four weeks before the ship button, and the most important work happens before the app is live.

Four weeks out

  • App Store Optimization audit. Title (30 chars), subtitle (30 chars), keywords field (100 chars on iOS). Research terms with real search volume, not vanity words.
  • Screenshots with outcome-focused captions. What the user achieves, not what the screen shows.
  • Waitlist landing page live. One-sentence value prop, email capture, one CTA. No more than 150 words.
  • Product Hunt "Coming Soon" page set up. Collect followers so the day-one notification hits a warm list.
  • Start showing up in two or three communities where your users hang out. Daily or near-daily. Helpful, not promotional.

Two weeks out

  • Submit for App Store review. Apple usually takes 24 to 72 hours now, but give yourself a buffer for a rejection loop.
  • Draft your launch-day content. Reddit posts, Product Hunt tagline and first comment, X thread, LinkedIn post. Write them all now so you are not scrambling under pressure.
  • Line up five to ten warm supporters who will upvote or comment on launch day. Not fake votes. People who actually care.
  • Schedule a demo video (15 to 60 seconds). A GIF thumbnail beats a static hero image on Product Hunt.
  • Test the full install flow on a clean device. First-time-user drop-off is brutal. Fix it now.

Launch day

  • Product Hunt goes live at 12:01 AM PST. First four hours set the ranking for the day. Hit your warm list first.
  • Post to your primary Reddit community. Lead with the problem, not the product. URL in a comment if the sub restricts direct product links.
  • X thread goes out mid-morning US time. First tweet is the hook, last tweet is the CTA.
  • Respond to every comment within 10 minutes. Fast response correlates with sustained trending.
  • Personal network blast: friends and family email, LinkedIn post. Expect one big spike that fades by the next day. Plan for it, do not rely on it.

Week 1 after launch

  • Respond to every App Store review. Apple weighs responsiveness in ranking.
  • Message every early user who left real feedback. Ask a follow-up question. Converts into advocates.
  • Watch activation and day-one retention. If more than half your installs churn by day one, fix onboarding before more traffic.
  • Post a launch retrospective. Numbers, what worked, what failed. Generates its own wave of engagement and signals credibility.

What to skip

Skip press releases to generic wires. Skip paid "top app" badges from low-traffic sites. Skip referral programs until you have 500 users. Skip push notification strategy until you have 30-day retention data. Skip anything that is not a conversation with a real potential user or a real piece of content that ranks.
